Counselling is Only for ‘Major’ Issues or ‘Crazy’ People

Counselling is for everyone. Think of it as a spectrum, rather than a box you fit into. Most people seeking counselling are ordinary people facing ordinary problems. On the other side of the spectrum are those facing more severe issues such as manic episodes and psychiatric disorders.

Counselling Will Always Take a Long Time to Become Effective

Everyone’s treatment plan is unique to their goals. Most people complete their treatment plans in as little as 3-4 months. Some people may choose to stay on for maintenance while others, unfortunately, may have extended treatment plans due to more severe trauma. 

Counsellors Will Blame or Shame You

Good counsellors will build you up and help you grow. They are not there to assign blame or shame you for your challenges. They will provide constructive criticisms and suggest changes, but good therapy is not about negativity. 

There’s No Point in Dwelling on the Past

Resolving past issues is important before you can truly face the future without carrying baggage.

It is strong and courageous to be vulnerable. It is not a weakness that makes a person proactive about their mental health, but a true sign of strength.

Therapists are everyday people, just like you. They do not have special gifts of insight or intelligence. They don’t have all the answers, but together, you will work with them doing your own self-work and be able to find your own answers.
